As the temperature starts to drop and you can almost hear the Christmas songs playing in almost every shop you visit, you know it’s almost time – The Christmas rush is fast approaching.
We’ve put together a list of 5 tips on how you can beat the rush and ensuring your festive season runs as smoothly as possible.
1. Look at previous year’s sales
One of the first things to consider is to make sure you are aware of the performance of the previous year. Do you know which dishes were the most and least popular? Did you have enough staff to cover the shifts? Did you have a target to meet? What are the busiest days? It’s always important to use the previous year’s sales as a benchmark to ensure you are able to analyse what could be improved for this year’s Christmas rush.
2. Schedule a meeting with the team
During the festive period, everyone is looking to take time off to spend with their friends and family. It’s always handy to meet with the team to make sure who would be taking their time off (or those who are unable to complete their shift) and which team member would cover their shifts, otherwise, you’ll risk the chance of your customers waiting longer for their dishes due to a lack of staff. Once everyone is aware of who would be taking their holidays, it could save a few stressful ‘last minute’ planning.
3. Get help
Having concerns about the number of staff available? You are probably right. Make sure you have plenty of seasonal staff to help you and your team to get through the festive rush. This often means to employ and train them before the rush as they are effectively representing the restaurant whilst on duty.
4. Stock levels
Having the right number of staff is important, but it is also important to ensure your stock levels are met for the Christmas rush. We all know that it can be disappointing to turn up to your favourite restaurant only to get told your favourite dish is not available due to a lack of ingredients. Start planning and order from your suppliers as soon as possible.
5. Bottled water?
We hate to talk about the budgets and costs but do you offer bottled water to your customers? We talked about having the right number of staff and order the right stock levels for dishes, but when it comes to bottled water – do you know if you have enough to last through the Christmas rush?
